Introducing the Link Splicer

Introducing the next FeedBurner service: the Link Splicer! After we released the Flickr Splicer last month, we had a number of requests to splice in other kinds information, including online bookmarks. We couldn't agree more ... now, you can splice your del.icio.us bookmarks into your feed.

Not familiar with del.icio.us? It's an awesome service with an awkward domain name (don't worry, you'll get the hang of it after mistyping it a few times). Here's the description of the service from their about page:

del.icio.us is a social bookmarks manager. It allows you to easily add sites you like to your personal collection of links, to categorize those sites with keywords, and to share your collection not only between your own browsers and machines, but also with others.

Our Link Splicer basically generates a feed item at the end of every day that summarizes the links that you added during the day, and then inserts that entry into your main feed. To start using this service, just select the "Link Splicer" and enter your del.icio.us id.

Tip o' the hat to Jeff Veen, who inspired this service with his perl script that inserts a summary of his del.icio.us links as a Movable Type entry. We wanted to achieve the same effect for all publishers for all blog engines, but Jeff's solution is still valid for those Movable Type users that want the link summaries to be part of the blog itself.

As always, we welcome -- no, crave -- feedback, so please let us know what you think.

Nice idea, I like it. :) And since you were asking for feedback: Would you consider adding the same thing for Bloglines's user blogs (for example http://bloglines.com/blog/Carlo)?

This'd be great.

Cheers,
Carlo

Great suggestion, Carlo! Thanks for the feedback.

Convergence! Yes. Now if we can get our LJ atom and/or Atom feeds then all one needs on one's server is a cron job to fetch the burner feed and transform it to HTML on a regular basis!

i second the request for bloglines ;)

Can you use the link splicer to post only specific categories within del.icio.us?

Noah,

I knew someone was going to ask for this! (smile) Yeah, the tags within del.icio.us are really powerful. There *is*, in fact, a way splice only a specific category, although it's a little bit of a hack. Just append "/" and the tag name to your user id in the link splicer and you'll just get the bookmarks in that category spliced in.

For example, my del.icio.us id is "ghonzo", but if I just wanted to splice in my java feeds I would enter my id as "ghonzo/java".

Hope that helps!

Bloglines and furl fans ... watch this space! Thank you for the suggestions, your voices are being heard.

Thanks for getting back to me on that, Eric. I kind of suspected that and had already tried it, but I just couldn't wait until the end of the day to find out. You should really put that information with the signup form so everyone knows. I know for me, my del.icio.us account collects way too many links in one day to be sending out with my feed, but I will certainly start to put outstanding links in a special folder. Thanks again for the help.

We've made some improvements to the Link Splicer, including adding support for Furl and Bloglines. More info here: //www.burningdoor.com/feedburner/archives/000689.html

As a blogger, what are your thoughts on Podcasting?Mark

Okay ,Ihave registered ,and I've also "burned" my url. Basically what do I do now?
I just wanted to add links to my blog (fefefartblog.blogspot.com) which led me to...this..

Help! :-(

Great job on this. Have found the links exceedingly useful.

Nice feature. Thanks. This and PingShot are features that make your service very useful.
