Burnvelopes? No, FeedBurner Email

It turns out that not everybody is quite ready to ditch the old Inbox just yet. People like to be notified when their favorite publishers have something new posted, but a large audience still finds the familiar setting of email to be the most comfortable and reliable way to receive updates. We initially announced feed-by-email support back in October. Since then, we have been asked by a number of our publishers to integrate our own feed-powered email update service, and we are the kind of people who do what is asked of us, if the question is asked nicely, in lower case, with a minimum of question marks.

Today, we launch...are you ready for the catchy name? FeedBurner Email. There are a few specific questions we want to answer about our mail service, not the least of which is where can you find it and who is the branding genius that came up with the reflexive moniker?

There are several feed-to-email services in the marketplace. Ours has a very specific focus that is different from some of the other offerings. FeedBurner Email is strictly a publisher service. There is no subscriber landing page at FeedBurner, no dashboard for subscribers to login to and manage their emails, and so on. Just easy-to-read, plain text or HTML email containing the latest posts. The messages that go out are largely "brandless," by which we mean that a) the emails are delivered as "from" the publisher, not FeedBurner and b) there is no FeedBurner header and only a very light "delivered by" footer. Publishers have access to the email addresses that subscribe to their feed, and they can export these addresses and move from FeedBurner to another service at any time. View a sample FeedBurner Email.

As we continue to build out email capability, we want to give publishers options. We will continue to promote our partner services, FeedBlitz and Squeet, and we may add further services as well. FeedBlitz provides a robust set of both publisher and subscriber tools, and we added Squeet to the lineup because some publishers wanted to offer a much more subscriber-focused experience where the subscriber is in full control of the delivery schedule, etc.

This version of FeedBurner Email is — the tension builds — free! To activate this service, log into your FeedBurner account and make your way to the "Publicize" tab. We will be adding a premium version of the service that will provide publisher-selected delivery scheduling options as well as branding capabilities. We also will be adding a number of other enhancements to the premium version, but as the service's chief architect is on vacation right now, it's probably not fair for us to publicly announce deliverables while he's at the beach. By the way, always a good idea to launch a new service when the chief architect is unavailable for questions. That's a little something we like to call "rolling hard six."

Okay, I feel like an idiot. I'm logged in. Where is the Publicize tab?

Posted by: Tom Maddox | April 19, 2006 02:38 PM

It would be nice to have some way to deep link to these features for existing publishers. If I blog about the feature I could provide users one click to check out FeedBurner Email within their own accounts and feeds.

Given that you need a feed id for the config, I realize this would only save one click, but at least a publisher would be able to read about the feature before selecting one or more feeds for implementation.

Tom - Once you sign in to FeedBurner, select your feed by clicking on the feed title and you'll see the Publicize tab.

Niall- Good idea! Thanks for the suggestion.

If you already are using Squeet or Feedblitz through feedburner, you'll have to deactivate that email option (under the publicize tab). Then you'll be able to turn on the feedburner tool.

Hope this helps.

How do I move my FeedBlitz subscribers to Feedburner ?

dick,
FreeBurner Email and FeedBlitz are nice services for blog readers but are they really effective for blog producers? one issue that strikes me is the content is distributed but it doesn't necessarily mean more traffic to someone's blog. i mean why go to the blog if you can what you want via e-mail?

thoughts?

mark

I can't find any info on publishing schedules, or how to set the "from" address on emails, or, really, any configuration options at all! All I get is code for a subscription form. Where's the "rest" of the service?

Will the feedburner email option be available when someone clicks on a feed chicklet? Or is it a sidebar (JavaScript) exclusive?

Thanks Dick and the team at Feedburner for realising that not everyone's ready to switch to RSS readers :)

Mark, the same argument could be applied to RSS feeds - why go to the blog if you can have what you want via RSS?

Awww, that crappy FeedBurner, releasing new technology. That email stuff is dead! Remember? We're all just posting to secret blogs (like bunkers) and reading it through feeds. It'll never last.

Totally joking, bugfaces. Good on you!

Same question here, how do I move my FeedBlitz subscribers to Feedburner?

Thanks!

Hello,

I have activated this new email service on my blog Media & Tech (in French) See http://media-tech.blogspot.com

I have been a happy user of Feedburner for a year with no issue and lots of satisfaction.

But this new service raises a new issue for the non-english blogs using Feedburner: until this service, Feedburner was invisible for my users (who don't speak english for many of them).

Now, with the email service, Feedburner gets visible to them: so I have an issue with the text in English in subscription windows and subsequent email(s). It will embarass (frighten ?) some of them.

Could you plan to translate those windows / enmail in other languages to extend the reach of Feedburner Email?

Thanks by advance

didier

Ditto. How to move FeedBlitz users to Feedburner? Also, will the e-mail option also send photos like Feedblitz does? The sample doesn't show it, yet.

Thanks!

Great idea but a little difficult to actually implement. Battling a bit to activate the service in the first place.

Good thing I only had one Feedblitz subscriber... myself.

On the other hand, can I even see my list of subscribers?

Two queries:

1. where can we set the email type (plain text or HTML) to be sent?

2. where can Publishers access the email addresses that subscribe to their feed?

I've tried Feedburner Email and it's really fantastic! Very simple to use and keeping the focus on our side (the publisher's side I mean).
Congrats

Ditto here. FeedBlitz to Feedburner? The new Feedburner emails look much cleaner.

Nice service. I like that you do not take people away from by blog. I wouldn't mind, actually, it might be a better user experience, but I'd like for you to send them back when you are done.

I don't like how FeedBlitz holds onto the user after they've signed up. It doesn't bother me too much, but I prefer your interface.

You also generated nice XHTML. Some services still generate stuff that will not validate. The subscribe box you generated is handsome, I like the centered layout. It works with my templates.

Before I switch however, I really want a means to view who's subscribed to by blog, the email addresses, and I'd greatly appreciate having those totals rolled into my FeedBurner subscription totals.

Thank you for this nice service.

Is there a way for me to know who's subscribed, however?

This post states:

"Publishers have access to the email addresses that subscribe to their feed, and they can export these addresses and move from FeedBurner to another service at any time."

I'm not seeing the option to do so. Where can I find it?

Great addition to a great service.

Mitch and others: re export, right now just email us via feedback @, and we will export the address list for the verified feed owner. Export will be an automated process AND your subscriber list will be integrated into the reporting dashboard in the very near term. This is the next thing that's being built, and we wanted to get this rolled out in advance of revisiting the stats page design again. re Import: also, shoot us a note and we'll help verified publishers import their list to FB. This is more complicated to make an automated process for the free service, as it creates potential opportunities for people to simply upload bulk mailing lists that arent necessarily opt-in blog lists, so we'd prefer to handle this on an ad hoc basis right now.

Hi,
I just activated the service. How do I know the number of subscribers to the email subscription? Is there anyway in which we can know the email IDs of the subscribers?

Thanks for the feedback.

I put myself on the list of subscribers to check out what our news subscribers would be getting (you've done a marvellous job - well done), but the email I received yesterday - and again a few moments ago - does not contain all of the news which has been posted.

Are emails limited to the most recent 10 news entries? Can this be increased or will there be an option to increase the 'send out email' rate per day?

I was expecting subscribers to receive each and every posting we put on the site (which is several a day) in a batched email send out.

Didier -

--Rick

Very nice.

I have to ask, though -- where's the link to your privacy policy? I can't be askin' readers to give you their addresses if you aren't promising not to sell them.

answers to more q's in the comments here...

Michael, the TOS and Privacy policies are linked to at the bottom of the FeedBurner front page.

John, there is no limit to the number of posts that get sent out; however, is it possible your source feed only contains ten items such that you are 'rolling over' your source content in the 24 hours between one email and the next? When we go to send out email, we examine your feed and only send out "what's in here since i sent email out yesterday around this time". If your source feed only contains 10 items, eg, then the FB feed will also contain 10, and you could be publishing so much content that it passes in and out of your source feed before we see it the next day. That's the only thing I can think of that would cause what you're seeing. email us via feedback @ if this isn't the issue or you still have questions.

Kaps, as we do with FeedBlitz and others, we include the number of email subs on your statistics page as a separate section on the subscribers section of statistics. The totals are included in your subscriber totals. Yes, on a near term rev we will provide clickthrough access to you list of subs. Remember, this is something we are doing on behalf of the publisher, so it's your list and it has to be your list so that you can leave and use another service whenever you want.

Great stuff! I will set it up on my blog brandtobedetermined.com

However, what I'd LOVE to see is a way to put a form on a large number of sites with valid feeds, but that are not preconfigured for feedburner (yet). This would allow all tendenci.com sites to have a form, and perhaps auto-register the feeds with a corporate account? Or an import-opml function and hidden var for one global but behind the scenes account?

change this ffid=308263 to ffid=new&ffidparent=308263&feed=blah.rss or something we can script globally?

Sorry, again, getting greedy, but it rocks and I'm excited about it! Keep up the great work y'all!

Thanks,

Ed

I'd like to be able to add this to a larg e

Is there an option to use a different email address on the send email? It looks like it's using the email address attached to me account. I didn't realize this until I got my first test.

Will there be a FeedFlare option? Thanks.

Having just added your new email service to my web site, the next thing I did was to subscribe to my own feed. I feel the opt-in process to be heavy on the user and does not share enough similarities with the website it serves. I think some work must be done to enable customization or better branding of the email subscription opt-in process. Other then that, I am waiting to see my new email subscribers in the dashboard.

Keep up the good work.

great service! (although I'm getting an error when I try to sign up, "There was an error sending a verification email"... hopefully this will work itself out)

let me second AJ's request from above - it would be cool if there was a "subscribe by email" option after a user clicks on the Smartfeed Chicklet

by the same token, it would be cool if the "FeedCount" Chicklet counted email subscribers as well as true feed subscribers. (Perhaps it could be toggled to count ALL subscribers, or just feed subscribers.)

Thanks!

More answers!

Ed, not yet, that will be part of a premium service. Soon.

Anne, yes, that is the case and we don't currently do a good enough job of pointing that out to you when you set up the service. We know that, and we'll make ui adjustments accordingly.

Simplified media, three things: a) the feedcount chicklet DOES count email subscribers in that number! (and it does whether you use our service or feedblitz's. They're both integrated in there as are a number of others). b) great idea to you and AJ on the email in browser friendly. We love it. c) hmmm, not sure what you're talking about on the "error sending out verification email". you were trying to set this up for your own blog and then test subscribe yourself? It's possible maybe that this wasn't a FeedBurner error message?

Ohad, the free service will generally retain this "Brandless" look and feel. We hear you on all the opting-in a subscriber has to do in our approach (it's referred to as double opt-in, confirm with a CAPTCHA and then confirm a confirmation email before you're turned on), and we're looking at that.

Now that you have the subscriber e-mail addresses, can you show them on the Feed Subscribers page? It lists the number of FeedBurner email subscribers but I'd like to see who they are.

Getting your feeds into e-mail can produce a lot more subscribers. We have a highly viral flare for people who want not jsut spread a single message but create new subscribers as well.

We bind your content and a reader in one easy go with a Flare called "get this in outlook"

give it a try www.inclue.com

After I deactivate Squeet, can I import the subscribers into Feedburner?
Also how about Bloglet?

I have just installed it on a German site and it went through like a breeze. But if FeedBlitz was activated before there definitely needs to be a hint that you can switch to FB mail.

It would be definitely very nice to have more languages available. It's no problem to customize the form but the pop-up, the initial email and the FB page are in English which is not the appropriate workflow language for my German visitors :-)

Yes and for my sites where I already have an amount Feedblitz subscribers I also would like to know what happens if I deactivate FeedBlitz and activate FB mail?

How to remove the sentence under mail box "Inbox too full? Subscribe to the feed version of XXX in a feed reader. If you prefer to unsubscribe via postal mail, write to: XXX....."?

Just thought you might like to know that shortly after setting up our RSS feeds and putting them through Feedbuner, we also started using Feedblitz a few weeks later.

The results; about 140 subscribers via each delivery channel. We do also have a further 5500 people who subscribe to our weekly email bulletin, so I guess email isn't quite dead yet :)

Getting feeds by mail solves several problems. I run from a variety of computers using executable Linux from a thumbdrive. I can use google mail to receive my feeds and not use up the precious little space left on the thumb drive. This is an ideal Web 2.0 application and I'm happy to see it.

I had 300 new subscribers from Feedburner Email alone in the last 2 weeks! This feature totally rocks! Thanks guys!

Yes, it does seem that people still prefer email to using the RSS feed, but hey, whatever it takes to add another subscriber to my show. Heheh!

Is there any way to subscribe through alternative means without using the form? Feedblitz has an url link that you can insert into an email. I tried using the individual url's within the generated html, but while one brought me to a page with my posts, as read through feedburner, the other just brought me to a sign up page of another blog I just subscribed to - not mine.

I am really looking forward to consolidating these services. Thanks!

Demian

Some of my friends shifted from feedblitz to feedburner already, congratulations!

When can we have the chicklet to show off the numbers of subscribers thru email?

I suggest that u have a page specially deal with fb email function, as yr users will grow very fast and raise more questions to u.

We've been using FeedBlitz for quite a while now and wanted to try out the FeedBurner service. I also was trying to put something into my HTML e-mail signature block to allow users to subscribe to the e-mail version of the RSS (most of my users don't even know what an RSS reader is!!) I posted the code for the e-mail subscribe into the signature block and it largely works, though I get an error message when trying to use it. Even though it seems to successfully take the e-mail address and launch the captura page, when the user types the captura word an error message appear indicating that the email address is a required feed so there was an error sending a verification email. Any ideas on what's going wrong?

On another note, is there a way to manually add users from the FeedBurner site? Also, it seems to me that there should be an e-mail box right on the Browser Friendly box indicating that an e-mail subscription is also possible (this functionality would be really great in making this page accessible to my readers.)

Thanks! Love your services!!

Hello Laura,

Using the signature block of email to promote your content is a cool idea. Unfortunately, I can see where a variety of email clients may have trouble with submitting a form and making sure that all of the required arguments (including the user's email address) are provided. One enhancement we have in mind is the ability to simply provide a link to the subscribe form that you can place almost anywhere -- no form required. Our popup form would then prompt for an email address. That may be the only way to reliably distribute a "subscribe now" offer in your signature via HTML email.

Feel free to send a note to feedback AT feedburner.com, including the code you are placing in your email footer; also do let us know which email application you are testing with and also experiencing the problem within. We can take a look.

You said "Publishers have access to the email addresses that subscribe to their feed, and they can export these addresses and move from FeedBurner to another service at any time."

I'm asking "How?"

Does the service allow readers to subscribe to individual category feeds?

will emails go out only when there are new posts?

Posted by: Debbie | June 5, 2006 05:43 PM

I think the email option is fabulous - it looks just great when delivered into the mailbox. My only problem is that my readers miss out on comments - but for the service I am running - well the email option is tops. Readers can always clock back into the Blog at times to catch up.

Posted by: Judy | June 7, 2006 06:28 AM

Sorry if I missed the answer to this, but I have a question similar to Mark's from April 19. FeedBlitz allows you to use email to drive hits to your website since you can customize how much of a blog entry to send. You can send the first 20 letters of the entry which forces them to click on a link to your blog. Does (if not, will) FeedBurner's email service offer the same option? If so, I'm switching over immediately!

Posted by: Ben S | June 23, 2006 03:49 AM

I want email subscribers to receive only the post headlines, not the entire post. Can FeedBurner do this? Also, will an email go out only when there's a new post? Sorry if I missed this....

Great Service! Thanks a lot for providing your feedburner email service.

Thanks again!

It keeps saying inactive, even though I have subscribers signed up? What is the deal, it won't give me an option to activate?!?! Please help!

Getting feeds by mail solves several problems. I operate from a kind of computers using executable Linux from a thumbdrive. I can take google mail to obtain my feeds and not take upward the precious less place left on the finger effort. This is a perfect Web 2. 0 application and I'm glad to view it.

I had 154 new subscribers from Feedburner Email alone in the last 3 weeks!

It would be definitely very nice to have more languages available. It's no problem to customize the form but the pop-up, the initial email and the FB page are in English which is not the appropriate workflow language for my German visitors :-)

I have finally figured out how to add "subscribe by email" to my blog (with thanks to this page). HOWEVER, when I have registered some of my email addresses, I am getting nothing when I post a new blog.

What's with?

So far, I have been using the email burner and I absolutely love it! It works great, clean, and it is a great way to "hold" your viewers.

It looks like I came to this party a little late! I can't believe I've using feedburner's services for months and didn't know about this. I was lucky enough to come across a fellow blogger's site and saw the little orange envelope next to his subscribe button. Well shiver me timbers....

I just have to say that the email subscription is awesome. I've been using it for a few months and currently 68% of my subscribers use the FeedBurner Email service! RSS is grand but so many people are simply more comfortable with email...

yeah thanks for this service...this keeps ppl coming back now...cheers...
