nokia 6680 ate my memory card

I think actually my memory card went bad. This is the Nokia branded card that came with the 6680 not a third party card.

Sunday something funny started happening on my Nokia 6680 when showing someone some pictures i had taken, a bunch of the images started showing the "broken" image gif mid slideshow. next thing i knew, i lost about 20 pictures i had taken.

using the on-board file manager, revealed my "Images" directory was empty, and checking the card on my laptop via an adaptor confirmed this.

next, my apps started throwing a "SymbianOS Error = -20" which i found out to be the nebulous "corrupt" error via the Symbian developer site.

putting the card back in the 6680 caused it to no longer boot and give me an error that basically said "this 6680 is toast, please return it to Nokia."

i wanted to replace it with a bigger card anyway, but it was a little disconcerting that i lost a bunch of great pictures. big bummer.

moral of the story - back up your phone memory like you would any other hard drive. don't say i didn't warn you.

england 2, usa 1

05282005(004).jpg

well, right here in chicago, i got to witness some of the most pathetic soccer i have ever seen by the u.s. squad play that still showed just how far we still have to go in mastering this sport, against an england team pretty much playing their second string, no less.

you can see from the picture above that brits from all around came to see this game, and easily outnumbered those rooting for the u.s. you normally don't get to see the english flag around these parts (most americans would only recognize the union jack) - and i myself didn't know until yesterday that that song they made us sing in grade school every day called "our country 'tis of thee" is just a re-penning of the english national anthem. don't beleive me, go sing these words to it. eery enough was listening to "the star spangled banner" in this environment, at a "friendly", when you realize the whole reason this song was written was to celebrate the separation from england. it didn't quite hit me until right then. all that aside, these people take their football seriously. the guy sitting next to me was wearing the english flag as a skirt, and the number of authentic england kits i saw at $70 apiece would be enough to support a small nation.

back to the game... the u.s. sure had their chances, but just couldn't capitalize. landon donovan missed a couple goals that seemed to have been automatic, and brian mc bride was pretty much a non factor - passing the ball out of bounds on a few occaisions.

england's kieran richardson of manu showed some finesse with two goals - but the clear standout on the field was joe cole of chelsea. he pretty much schooled everyone one-on-one and pretty much controlled the midfield when he needed to.

it was out of pure luck that we even scored at all, but it made the game interesting enough to ignore the missing stars who had to stay home to play for their clubs and otherwise.

Feedness

If you happen to be halfway proficient in Spanish, you should take a look at Feedness which was described to me as a "Spanish version of Bloglines, but better." I couldn't agree more.

It's probably closer to Newsgator or Rojo but way faster, and way prettier. In fact, you should give it a try even if you can't read Spanish. It's an RSS reader, you'll get the jist of how to use it!

renewed interest in the SMT-5600

smt5600-pfs.gif

I think I'm pretty happy with my nokia 6880 these days, especially since it syncs...I would be happier if there were a 1 GIG memory card available for it (perhaps there is, but i've only seen a half gig). I'd like if i could use it with y! music...and thus my interest has been piqued for the Audiovox SMT-5600.

i always kinda liked this phone. it's small, has a good browser, and a super fast java VM. and it also can play "plays for sure" media.

Symbian series 60 can play AAC and MP3 just fine, but i think i'd have to de DRM my iTunes files to play any music on it.

So i'm wondering, does plays for sure require a hardware chip for DRM, or can it be done with software? could a third party write a plays for sure player for the Series 60? would they have to buy a super expensive license from Microsoft? just a thought.

well, i did it today. in trying to fix my broken comments, i accidentally nuked the database for line of site. sometimes you need a clean, break however, so i'm not that broken up.

if you are here, it's probably because you are following my feed, which through the magic of feedburner should have led you here without incident.

nothing to see here. these aren't the droids you're looking for. move along.
