Kevin from Bokee makes Crain's
Great picture of Kevin from Bokee in Houhai - the reporters on this article actually went to Beijing and interviewed him. They were trying really hard to find an angle about how Google has had a hard time in China and "wouldn't it also be hard for FeedBurner?" I absolutely hate it when journalists have an agenda and just try to twist your words to fit their story. You know these guys were told "write a story on how evil the Chinese government is concerning the internet." Look at his questions for Kevin..."How do you censor?" My word. It ended up alright in the end, though, and the journalist was nice enough otherwise.
Great job, Kevin - keeping this article on task and providing the interesting tidbits about blogging in China and not about the sub-title "The Internet might seem like the ultimate free-speech medium. Not in China." In my trip to China, I definitely saw a society that wanted to break from the old-guard - and was certainly making great strides to do so, even if change would take a long time.

"Branding the Feed"

Our fearless leader is featured in the latest Business 2.0 article "Branding the Feed" where he talks about some of the rationalization behind why so many publishers are joining FeedBurner's RSS Ad Network.

Get your FeedBurner stats, as an ... RSS feed!
Simone Carletti - who runs RSS world in Italy, among doing a lot of other things, has created a pretty easy way for you to get your FeedBurner stats in any RSS reader. It uses the FeedBurner Awareness API and we love to see uses of our APIs like this.
his quickstart is here:

and you can get an example by clicking here:

Another hackathon down...
Read all about it! -- we just loaded up all the featurettes from last Friday's FeedBurner Hackathon III. My personal contribution was a Publisher Module for Netvibes - so that if you have an FB account you can quickly see your circ stats. The next thing I will add to this post hackathon is add the ability to get your FeedBurner Ad Network balance right in the module itself - for now it's a link.
It's always fun to put on a developer hat for a few days - in this case, I had to learn PHP, CSS, XHTML, and the Netvibes API, all in one day. whew! Here's what it looks like (i'll try to fix the spacing soon) - and if you want to add it just click this link.
I also plan to update the Google Homepage module as well - soon! You can click the picture below if you want instructions for that one.

Can Publishers Survive in an RSS Age? [Rick's quotes]
A few good quotes by our very own Rick Klau, and our friends at Newsgator and Wired at the link all the way at the bottom.
I think people underestimate just how big an impact Microsoft will have in releasing feeds as part of the experience in IE7 and Outlook 2007, and later, Vista. Yes, most IT shops and home users won't upgrade for quite some time, but I already think the IE7 user subscription experience is leaps and bounds better than anything else I've seen, and once publishers figure out how to make their feed more part of the content (see the BBC for great examples) and standardize on what they are showing readers, I think all the pieces will fall into place.
The "blogosphere" doesn't get that yet, because they're all using Firefox or Safari, both which have a very terrible feed reading experience built in.
A lot of people are waiting for some incredible renaissance in the feed reading experience, but in the end, I think the company that figures out how to fold it into what the average person does all day can grab a foothold on those users, and then innovate together with those subscribers as customers.
Like it or not, Microsoft knows this and is clearly spending a lot of time on it. below are some screenshots on the syncronized reading experience between IE7 and Outlook - click to enlarge.

Nokia takes on Moto in Chicago

An interesting choice of venue for Nokia's first brick and mortar store in the U.S. - right here in Chicago. I must say, I don't really know anyone who owns a Nokia phone anymore who isn't a mobile gearhead or wasn't given one by their employers at Google or Yahoo - and in Chicago (and probably many other places in the U.S.) - it's RAZRs as far as the eye can see.
Nokia used to have a pretty good foothold here with the 8290 and the 8390
- now those were kick-ass phones that took a lickin', and everybody had one of these in Nokia's heyday. Then Nokia went all smartphone on us, and only fools like me went nuts and bought the 6600 and beyond. Those were way to big and bulky for average Joe Chicago.
So, they're going to try to get back some brand awareness by opening a flagship store. Might be cool if I knew I could pick up some unlocked goodies they only sold overseas. Chances of that are slim to none, which is exactly how thick Nokia should be trying to make their phones.

Netgear WPNT834 RangeMax 240
if you're looking for a new router/wireless access point, i just bought this one a few weeks ago, and it has been absolutely stellar. my previous router ranged about one or two rooms in my house, but this one broadcasts over the whole thing and beyond. highly recommended.
UPDATE: in the comments someone reminded me, i had to turn off the stateful DOS inspection to get this to work with VOIP when the VOIP box was behind the router. after i did that, it worked fine.

Prediction: TechCrunch becomes the new FuckedCompany-type site
I love reading TechCrunch. It's one of the few blogs I read religiously, so I can see what shiny new toys there are to play with every morning. But just as Arrington is going to build them up, he's equal opportunity in reporting when they go down. This is going to be very entertaining to watch, as I've noticed he's already started to report on the closings of all the companies he has previousl reported the launchings of. Rock on, Michael.
Actually, since the FuckedCompany dude, Phil Kaplan, just left AdBrite today, he should just re-start FuckedCompany. It's about that time. It's a goldmine waiting to happen.

Another good essay on running a startup
this is an old post that i'm just discovering via evhead, which i catch up on every few months. i need to read ev's blog more frequently, because he posts in bite sized morsels which are easy to digest. he's also the genuine article, which i like.
anyway, these are all good and relevant. usually in lists such as this, there's one or two i don't agree with, but i'm on board with all ten here. I especially agree with #1 and #5.
selling to the wrong customers can definitely sink a business by dragging it down a rathole. how's that for mixing metaphors? if a customer feels like trouble, he probably is. that dovetails nicely with the intuition point.
business relationships are all about the convenants you set with a handshake. too many times i've seen legal contracts get in the way of good business. the contract should be there only as a safety net when a covenant is broken, or when a business relationship no longer exists, say, when one of the deal makers moves on to a new job.

one of my fave testimonials of all time
"Without Feedburner, Chub Creek would just be a puddle. Because of
them, we have an understanding of who's listening, how many listeners
there are, what the peak listening times are, and what color underwear
our audience has on. When iTunes comes out with something new that
would normally require a whole bunch of RSS knowledge (which we have
none of) Feedburner has already built it in, and it just works -
perfectly. Thanks for making us look so good!" Dave from Chub Creek. 5/31/06
