Search Engine Deoptimization?
I met someone a couple weeks ago who worked for an SEO company that specialized in Search Engine Deoptimization. Why on earth would you want your results not to show up first? Well, a few examples are
- your CEO is convicted of a crime
- someone demonstrates how to break your key product with a bic pen
- you are tired of a whiny blogger bashing your products for no reason (think Dell, for instance)
In all those cases, it would be best if the searches for your company didn't turn up those searches first.
Anyway, i just find it fascinating that there is such an amazing cottage industry that has developed around search.

Rails' Ridiculous Restrictions, a Rant [ via Joel on Software]
boy, i haven't seen this kind of software bigotry happening since the very early days of Java vs C++. i've never read "Joel on Software" before, and to be honest i am not sure how i happened upon this, but it makes me glad i'm not involved in such discussions anymore. i used to manage a few distinct groups of software bigots, and it makes one realize why there will never be peace in the middle east.
read on if you if you dare, and witness the zealotry of those who consider Jason Fried and DHH as the second coming of Christ.

paris is burning
lots of unrest in Paris - and i'm presenting there in a few weeks. it should be interesting to see how this plays out... i'm generally not a paranoid traveller. i was in London when the U.S. attacked Iraq, and in London again during the 7/7 bombings this year. it made things a little inconvenient, but that was about all.

Impeach Bush test results
wow, according to measuremap, i got 12 visitors in 8 hours from technorati by spamming one of their most popular searches and pinging them. imagine if i actually put real content in my description.
ipod nano. ipod nano. ipod nano.
i think tag spamming is going to be a huge problem. something technorati and delicious (i'm not going to bother with their wacky domain) will have to figure out. most of the skeptorati i talk to think delicious will fail because of this. skeptorati are the techhy types that hate everything else *they* aren't doing. you know the type...

Impeach Bush
this is only a test (although i probably agree with the sentiment). i noticed that "Impeach Bush" was the second highest technorati search today. i found that interesting, but more than that i wanted to see if technorati would index this blog. we shall see. i also saw AdSense ads for that keyword. funny.

etymology lesson for the day: biscuits
biscuits comes from the latin - "bi" meaning two and "cuits" meaning cooked. so it roughly means "cooked twice".
most people don't put together the italian "biscotti" with "buscuits" - but of course the two words are pretty much cognates.
ever see how you cook biscotti? you cook them once in a loaf, cut them into slices, and cook them again. yep, you cook them twice.
