Lumines for the LG CU-500
If you have an LG CU-500 on Cingular - I highly recommend Lumines, even if it's a game you've already conquered on the PSP or XBox 360 Arcade. The mobile version has a few new twists, and even some more tetris-like shapes to keep things interesting. By far the best time killer available. I will warn you, it's easy to get addicted!
You can download it right from the Cingular MediaNet deck, or have it pushed to your phone from the link below.

New Super Mario Bros is top US game
a great game for the DS - highly recommended. especially great for the two player mini-games that only require one cartridge.

Xbox 360 versus PS3
I really liked this interview in ars technica with Matt Lee of the Xbox 360 team, and some of his insights into the Xbox 360 vs the PS3.

VOIP on PSP and DS coming soon
cool idea, the issue of course is that both of these devices are single tasking, so you would have to totally back out of doing one thing to place or make a call...unlike a phone that interrupt a game when a call comes in. or am i wrong?

EA to buy JAMDAT for $680 million
Mobile Game Developer - EA To Acquire JAMDAT Mobile for $680 Million
I've always liked EA and I've always liked JAMDAT - so I think this is a great move by EA - to own a distribution partner that perhaps has the strongest carrier relationships out there.

lego star wars
if you have a boy in the 5-6 year old range, there's no game that has been better than lego star wars. not only is this the most age appropriate game for kids of this age, but it's got a great two player simultaneous mode that will allow you to play the game with your child. the designers clearly had this in mind as the manual comes with a "parent's guide". it just does an awesome job moving two players around the screen, allowing one player to drop in and out as needed, and most importantly saving your progress as you go. we now have this on GBA and PS2 - both highly recommended.

Winning 11 for the PSP

while in Japan, i was lucky enough to pick up a copy of World Soccer Winning Eleven 9, which has been released there, but won't be released in the US until February.
even though it's region encoded - it plays fine on my PSP - and of course the biggest problem is that i cannot read Japanese - but having played about every console soccer game since early in my youth - it wasn't hard to figure out how to play this one.
in short - this is a great game that will give FIFA 2006 (released yesterday) a run for its money. it's appropriately difficult to score, and definitely takes some mastery, which is what makes it fun.
if you can score a copy on Ebay or something - highly recommended.

UMD sales take off [via Ars Technica]
i agree with Elle in this story in Ars Technica about how UMD sales are surprising. i personally see the price tag at about $10 more for a UMD than a DVD and wonder why I would buy one...yet i am intrigued. i want to watch movies on my PSP, and yes, i'm sure i can find any one of 10 software packages that will rip them to a memory stick - so why can't Sony make these things cheaper? at any rate, i didn't expect sales to take off like this but if you go to target these days, the selections of UMDs are starting to look pretty impressive. and when i was recently in Tokyo, you should see the music video releases that have come out on UMD.
netflix, will you please carry UMDs?

games from japan
while in japan i picked up a few nintendo DS games for the kids...Nintendogs! pretty popular game there. basically, think tamagotchi, but with real dogs. there are three versions (two shown here) that allow you to feed, train, and grow your pup into a real dog. there's a couple cool twists:
1. the dogs react to voice commands. yep, if you know such things in Japanese, you can train your dog with commands. in through the DS microphone, and the pup on screen reacts.
2. you can put your dog onto your friend's DS via wireless, and they can play together.
have we figured out how to do any of this stuff yet? no way.
part of this was an experiment to see how well my kids would do without being able to read. the answer is "so-so". it turns out the y need their parents help now and again in learning video games more than i thought.
The PSP game (above) is called "Shotokou Battle" and generally seems to require a lot of setup before actually racing. i was told "Japanese like a lot of details."
At any rate, Nintendogs is cool, and i think there is an american release coming.

PSP and DS games, and language
i was reading this article in CNET about PSP Games Slumping in Japan and noticed that the top titles there for both the PSP and the Nintendo DS, all the top rated games in Japan are different than the ones on the top of the list here.
that got me to thinking... my kids seem to get around videogames pretty well without being able to read - could they play these titles and enjoy them without being able to read Japanese?
well the good news is i'm going to Japan this week, so we'll be able to find out. i definitely want to bring back a few of these to see how the top of the top holds up against the U.S. favorites. i'll report back with my findings...
