more MLS rumors - Ronaldo to New York?
Marca.com in Spain is "reporting" that Ronaldo could be imitating Beckham and leaving to go to the New York Red Bulls in the MSL. Could be an interesting year in the MLS here.
The article also says Ronaldo, who is just called "el gordo" - the fat one,by the Spanish press - could also possibly be going to a Saudi Arabian team that signed Figo.
All I know is there usually is some basis of truth to most rumors.

It's a whole new Galaxy for Beckham as he heads off to LA in the summer | the Daily Mail
I never thought this would actually happen in a million years. Well, at least for another 3 or 4. Beckham is only 31, and not quite over the hill yet, but the I guess the attraction to Hollywood for himself and Posh couldn't be denied and $250 million bones ain't bad either. Reminds me of when the NASL brought Pele to play for the NY Cosmos in '79. What, you don't remember that? Exactly.

United may go for Adu trial | the Daily Mail

Wow, looks like Freddy Adu might be playing in the FA Premier league soon. Bad for MLS, but certainly good for American Soccer.

play the zidane headbutt game
this made it's way around the office today. it's a bit in bad taste, since la gazzetta doesn't seem to say much about the zidane/materazzi incident.
it didn't stop the spanish from trying to read lips, though.
on to the game:

joga.com - ah, good. MySpace for soccer. why not.
Google and Nike get together to create a social networking platform centered around soccer and Joga Bonito, a Nike branded version of futsol. what is futsol? 3 on 3 soccer on a small hardcourt field, with a slightly heavier ball, made famous by Ronaldinho. There, you learned something new today.
Anyway, another chance to upload funny high school soccer picture.

Windows World Cup Gadget / RSS reader

click through for some cool screenshots
ah, rss and the world cup. that pretty much sums up my life lately.
i *think* that's how they wanted to spell it. thanks to mr. andrew for pointing this out. i actually think this is a ploy by MSFT to find pirated copies of windows since they require you to validate, but it's a great desktop widget nonetheless. you can even add one RSS feed as well. just one, though.

fire vs ac milan
AC Milan played the Chicago Fire last week here in Chicago. AC actually brought quite a few stars - Christian Vieri, Rui Costa, Cafu, and Maldini. Not as cool as the Real Madrid / Barca double header in Japan yesterday - but I love seeing these friendly games when they come on tour.

Japan wins in empty stadium
This was wild - but it was wild in Tokyo as Japan qualified for the World Cup by beating North Korea 2-0. What was wild about this game as I witnessed on television was that the game was played in an empty stadium in Thailand as a punishment for throwing bottles at the crowd in a game against Iran.

england 2, usa 1
well, right here in chicago, i got to witness some of the most pathetic soccer i have ever seen by the u.s. squad play that still showed just how far we still have to go in mastering this sport, against an england team pretty much playing their second string, no less.
you can see from the picture above that brits from all around came to see this game, and easily outnumbered those rooting for the u.s. you normally don't get to see the english flag around these parts (most americans would only recognize the union jack) - and i myself didn't know until yesterday that that song they made us sing in grade school every day called "our country 'tis of thee" is just a re-penning of the english national anthem. don't beleive me, go sing these words to it. eery enough was listening to "the star spangled banner" in this environment, at a "friendly", when you realize the whole reason this song was written was to celebrate the separation from england. it didn't quite hit me until right then. all that aside, these people take their football seriously. the guy sitting next to me was wearing the english flag as a skirt, and the number of authentic england kits i saw at $70 apiece would be enough to support a small nation.
back to the game... the u.s. sure had their chances, but just couldn't capitalize. landon donovan missed a couple goals that seemed to have been automatic, and brian mc bride was pretty much a non factor - passing the ball out of bounds on a few occaisions.
england's kieran richardson of manu showed some finesse with two goals - but the clear standout on the field was joe cole of chelsea. he pretty much schooled everyone one-on-one and pretty much controlled the midfield when he needed to.
it was out of pure luck that we even scored at all, but it made the game interesting enough to ignore the missing stars who had to stay home to play for their clubs and otherwise.
