note: please download latest co-branded release here: FeedBurner Mobile Feed Reader

Here's the latest beta version of a feed reader for the Sony Ericsson P900 and the Nokia 6600 that uses the internal browser to actually read the feed items. It's written using the J2ME MIDP 2.0/CLDC1.0 platforms so I'm not sure as to the stability as of yet but so far so good. I really wrote this as a tool for myself, but i'll keep developing it into something real if there is demand.
It's almost time for a first release.
This release of BD3 Feed Reader 0.90 supports:
* (new) HTML scraped descriptions up to 1K
* (new) Added preference for default action on the item screen (Browse or View Description)
* (new) Pressing the Joystick or Scrollwheel launches default action on lists
* feeds persisted across sessions
* updating feeds manually
* updating feeds automatically at a specified time period
* bold titles of updated feeds
* launching the platform browser on feed items
* browsing item descriptions (summaries) in the tool
* fetches optimized for if-modified-since (saves bandwidth)
* support for the extended latin encoding
* reader now reports itself as a user agent
* preferences for small, medium, or large fonts
* preferences for how many recent items to fetch. for instance, you can choose to fetch only the 5 most recent items to save memory and time
For now, click on a text ad if you like it.

FAQ
How do I install this?
Either enter the .jad link above into the browser on your P900 or download the .jar file and install it to your P900 via the syncstation, bluetooth, or infrared. It's highly recommended to install this on your memory card, because the database will be created wherever you install it.
if you are upgrading and you want to keep your current feed database, make sure and click 'yes' when prompted if you would like to save your user data. go ahead and install it right over the previous version.
What phones does this work on?
As far as I know, it only works on the P900 with firmware CDA162003/5
If it's written in J2ME, why won't it work on any Java enabled phone?
This is built using MIDP2.0, which as of today is implemented on the P900 and the Nokia 6600, the Motorola V300, V400, V500, V600, and the samsung P400. I chose MIDP2.0 as both a learning experience and to implement things such as using the platform browser and OTA setup via SMS (in the future). I have not had the occaision to try it on the moto or samsung phones.
Does it work on the Nokia 6600?
yes it does, however see below - there is a known bug in the J2ME implementation on the nokia 6600 that prevents this from working. bummer!
if you have a newer version of firmware for the 6600 or the 6620, this will probably work. anyone? bueller? anyone know how to get that newer version of firmware?
the newest version supports reading descriptions up to 1K and the HTML gets stripped out. some people have said that this is enough to make it useful for them, so great!
Does it work on the Sony Ericsson P800?
the P800 version is here
How come the umlaut and the å show up as boxes?
if they are encoded as escapes in the XML, they will, otherwise, i am working on figuring out why these characters don't make it into Java intact.
What's the roadmap?
nearer term:
* persistence of feed items across sessions
* ATOM support
* sms of links to self for browser launch (?)
* usability improvements
* more error handling
* optimized memory usage
longer term:
* loading from an OPML file
* More UIQ-like controls, like double clickable lists
* OTA setup via SMS of OPML
Got any screen shots?
Sure:

I've been giving the reader a shot, but it always fails to launch my browser...

thanks martin - let me know what firmware you are running- this is a feature of MIDP2.0 that i believe is only in the latest and greatest CDA version but it would be good to know for sure.

i would love to use this on my 6600 and i have an excellent idea for text entry, one which i notice most developers overlook: the opml file. the opml file would make using an rss reader no matter what manner of text entry is available on the device. consider it?
Posted by: eric lin at December 16, 2003 01:00 AM
yes i think i mention in the faq loading opml via sms, but an easier shorter term solution would be to load the opml file locally or via http. i'll add it to the roadmap in the next update.

Tried it with the nokia 6600. In short what happened:
- install & start-up: OK
- add & get feed: OK (used the TheReg feed)
- list entries: OK
- browse entry: Alert! (2nd try - app crash!)
- feed data no persistent between session!
- settings & about screen: OK
So - the start-up of the internal browser does not work :(
Good work - keep on going.

FYI: Did some research on that browser start-up issue - check out the known issues in the Nokia 6600 MIDP 2.0 Implementation
http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/1,,040,00.html?fsrParam=3-3-/main.html&fileID=4050
They state that MIDlet.platformRequest(String URL) does not work in firmware 3.42.1.

wow. thanks a ton for looking into this. all good to know. those are some severe limitations in using midp2.0 on this version of nokia firmware. is the 6600 firmware user upgradeable or only available at a service center?
it took sony ericsson a couple firmware updates to get this right too.
i guess this means i'll have to write an internal browser digestion of the content which was an option i was considering anyway.
Posted by: Steve at January 4, 2004 04:45 PM
firmware update only at service centers (afaik).

hello steve,
you're right in pointing out, that th firmware must be the newest one. its not working on my p900 with cda162003/3
right now i'm trying to find a way to upgrade.
do you have a clue how to update the firmware using a mac? because neither pc-suite nor cradle are supported.
thanks for any help,
daniel
Posted by: Daniel at January 12, 2004 07:20 AM
no, daniel, i don't know of any way to upgrade the firmware from a mac - but i'll ask around at ericsson and see what they say.
i'm curious too since i use a mac as my primary machine.
i always just use a PC to do all my firmware upgrades. ug.
Posted by: Steve at January 12, 2004 10:33 AM
downloads should work now.
Posted by: Steve at January 13, 2004 04:29 PM
Daniel, I've resorted to using Virtual PC to use the PC Suite on my Mac OS X box, and it does work, in an obvious brute force sort of way. Haven't tried a firmware update (phone's running CDA162004/14, no upgrade yet) but the phone backup worked for me. Of course, I would love to see Mark/Space release a Missing Sync for Px00 and filling in some of these holes, but I'm guessing when it comes to firmware and the utilities required, they'll be stuck to PC only...

Steve, could you add a preference to make the button in the feed details list be "description" instead of "browse"? Then the interaction would be feed -> list -> description -> web page. I always check the description of feed items before deciding to read more in a browser window...
Also, this will make it even more useful for those whose phones do not open the browser (like me; beta 4 doesn't launch the browser for me as I'm running CDA162004/14) as they can subscribe to full article feeds and read text from the description of the item.
Posted by: Noah at January 21, 2004 09:58 AM
yep, thanks noah, i'll put this in the next build. i'm also working on doing a much better HTML scrape of the description. thanks for the feedback.

Hi Steve,
thanks for answering, I think I will try VPC the next days.
