The key lesson learned is that when something is costly or difficult to develop for, developers will often wait until the "next version" which slows productivity on both sides.

Sometimes this is a good thing for the licensor, because they don't have as many licensees on old versions of platform, but it is a delicate balance.

holy sync batman, the version of Nokia Sync that comes with the 6680 actually works!

I've owned pretty much every generation of Nokia phone since they've been makin' 'em, and PC Sync has never once worked as advertised. It always seems to have some device driver trouble, or partially sync items, or bluescreen my computer, or something.

I tried using the 6630 version (which had troubles) with the 6680, and it had even more troubles, so i decided to actually install the version that came with the phone, and it worked.

AND, it synced via Bluetooth with no problems. Now I can actually have all my tasks and calendar and everything on my Nokia phone.

woo hoo!

first of all, yes, i know i was speaking bad french in the title of my previous post. it was intentional.

second, i have run into my fist problems using the Nokia 6680 mail client. it mostly has to do with how i use email.

see, i never delete email. i'm one of those people that has my different clients delete them from the server every X days, but i mostly keep copies on the client. and i don't like IMAP, so i use POP. IMAP is way to slow and chatty, especially for a mobile device.

as of right now i have about 400 messages on the server, and this seems to be giving nokia trouble on the client. i am now to the point where on every retrieval, it is telling me i am out of memory and need to free soem up. it doesn't specify whether this is RAM or ROM, so i really have no idea. i also can't find whether or not it is stoting my mail on the device or the memory card...

so far, it seems to work pretty well, but i have had one lock up while downloading my message box for the very first time. otherwise, it hasn't been so bad. i like the integration with the phone's alerting system, and it can download on a schedule in the background.

the one thing it does that Profimail does not, is download partial messages. i like this option compared to soley headers or full messages.

i do miss the HTML rendering however. i'll see how long i can hold off.

Music Unlimited. Super bummer.

Both are available on iTunes.

I've really been enjoying Y!mu and for the price, it's the best value in music - it's got me to think about "renting" music, which I never thought I would, and has generally been a good experience. I even broke down and started using y!messenger client proper after trying it.

Perhaps these are two albums (do kids who've never owned an album call them albums?) I'd rather own anyway.

I'll give them until 9am pacific.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced they had completed the acuisition of Messagecast into MSN. Messagecast is a pretty cool company that basically transcodes RSS into MSN Messenger Alerts, something I'm a big fan of since we also did this same thing back at Spyonit in '99.

What this says to me, and it's not out of line with what MSN says, is that MSN Spaces is much more worried about keeping up with features of the likes of AOL Journals, which offers some really cool features of notifiying you via AIM or AOL IM if someone comments on your posts, or one of your friends has added new posts, than they are worried about the likes of Six Apart or even Blogger for that matter.

if you haven't tried OpenOffice.org 1.9+ as an MSOffice replacement, you should. it's come through in a pinch for quite a few sticky situations for me lately, notably:

it was able to open a PowerPoint document that was authored on a mac but when opened on the PC in MS PowerPoint gave me "QuickTime plugin required" for all the embedded graphics. OpenOffice had no problem opening the document

Adobe Acrobat would only render an Excel file to PDF as a solid black square. Exporting the document to PDF from OpenOffice calc created a perfect PDF

how can this be? how can a stand-in perform better than the applications that define the file formats? I don't know but it does, and for all intents and purposes, it's free right now.

I also think the OpenOffice Word clone is much than MS Word at editing tables. If you have to edit a document that uses tables, you should definitely try it.
