3's motorola a920 users revolt!

this petition to get hutchinson 3g to unlock cababilites of the motorola920 is the first example i've seen of subscribers really getting miffed an an operator for trying to control what can and can't be done on their network, and the device that the user owns!

3 has locked the phone so that third party applications cannot be installed on the device, only internet sites approved by 3 can be browsed, and sockets to things like imap and pop servers cannot be opened through their gateway. amazing. bluetooth for a fee? what!? i can see why people are a little upset, especially if they paid the full £399 (that's $666, the number of the beast).

i've said this before, i'll say it again. the 3G provider that thinks of themselves like any other wireline ISP is the one that will win. don't try to control the content that flows over your network. don't try to restrict the apps that use your connection (within the law). just provide a fast, reliable, wireless pipe.

perhaps those things are at odds given the state of the market today. build this into your business models and figure it out. if you don't, you will lose to the operator that does.

A big regret buying this 3 phone and subscribing with 3!!! This is the 2nd Motorola A920 that I have. The first one was returned and replaced due to the fact that it switched off by itself (not good when your half way through a phone call/or sending an email). And guess what? The replacement phone now has the same problem. And what can I say about 3's customer services? The word "CRAP" comes to mind. As I understand,, 3's customer helpline call centre is based in India. I cant fault the operators, well spoken. polite etc.... but for the life of me, the customer care line number is so crackly and has a tendency to cut off (maybe something to do with the marvelous my marvelous Motorola A920!!!) And I found it was a nightmare asking the operator where I can find my nearest 3 shop for a replacement phone.

I totally agree about 3's total lack of customer service. everytime i have a problem with my my a920, i have to call india -- and the phone usually drops out before the end of the call. The main thing i find really annoying about my a920 is that when to battery starts to get low, functions and reception starts to die. i was standing smack bang in the middle of the CBD in my city and i couldnt get reception. Shithouse phone. Shithouse network.

Bluetooth? Oh yes, bluetooth that was supposed to be available in October, no November, no December... oh, it's here BUT you lose all the data on the phone and can't get it back on because - GET THIS - the cables will no longer work. They apparently have to give out (oh, probably not, you'll have to pay for them) new cables. Oh, and if you want bluetooth, you have to pay $33Aus.

Then there's the application error messages that pop up intermittently.

Don't put the phone within 5 metres of an active speaker either cos when it searches for a network for the umpteenth time you get deafened.

And customer service? Yes, I was quite miffed that the service staff were in India and couldn't actually tell me what the hell was going on. It's taken me 3 months to get them to sort the billing out properly.

WTF? I stepped over from Orange for this CRAP?!

I am really not happy. I'm within a hairs breadth of calling the telecommunications ombudsman about this gobshite.

Not Happy Jan.

Hey, I got the M920, its bluetoothed up, its siting in its charger and it works. I still have a vodacontract for twice the price, but Im about to cut it back to basic.(£15pm)
The 3 network is much better down south than up in the northern regions, news links, video, all seem to be fun tools I note the 925 is about to land, guess Ill need to put this 920 in the same draw as the noki 9000. Im happy, its saved me over 40 quid a month in voda charges, mind the batery could be , should be improved.

touchscreen will not work on my a920 after cleaning it. Any ideas on how to get it working again.

Absolutely shite phone and network.

I'm off back to 02.

High Recommendation: Steer WELL clear of this 3 network and the A920.

Could this be the Microsoft of Phone Networks? Or maybe the communications company is ran and managed by Bill Gates? Market cornering won't get you nowhere and like someone has already mentioned - The 'other' companies will rise out on top.

Not a very respecting start from a company who thought they could have it all.

Laughable, Hilarious - I could go on about both the Phone and the Network.

A bad case of being fooled by good looks.
My purchase of the A920 is turning into a nightmare as well.
First cable wouldnt connect to the phone securely
so it spend 6 weeks getting repaired.
Now it turns off by itself and now the cable is not connecting properly again and my associate has the same phone with the same problems.

I don't really think your thoughts are right. Maybe you need a loan?

been more of the collabourative, holistic dish network bent), the music is seldom as good. Examples directv I can think of immediately: Spacemen 3. Mercury mortgage Rev (this one is arguable either way). Sebadoh, insurance first with Lou and Eric, then with Lou and direct tv Jason. They Might Be Giants. Pixies, although job they just broke up before too much of it got credit card to happen. Here's another bold statement: loan in my opinion, there are enough exceptions satellite tv
