i've been trying out the FileConnection API for J2ME (JSR-75) on the new Nokia 6630 and glad to report it works as advertised - you can browse, add and delete files from both the phone memory and memory card.
of course this is pretty big news for J2ME which generally lives in it's own little world. this will be key to getting more mainstream J2ME apps that aren't games to market that don't have limiting features. I think this is also available on one of the Nextel phones as well.
for those on the techhy side, this just exposes "file://" as a protocol and adds some directory listing functionality.
for the sake of others that might try this out - you need to make a change to Nokia's example in the .jad file (add the following line):
MIDlet-Permissions: javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.read, javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.write
