i'm putting this here as so others can find this - but it's come to my attention that there's a slight snafu (i hate using military terms, but it's appropriate) with the Sony Ericsson S700 and K700 handsets that have already shipped: they are missing any type of root certificate for J2ME.
This means that these handsets (which can only be extended via J2ME) will have to prompt the user for network actions and multimedia access even if the partner is trusted - which generally will become an issue for any usability minded application developer.
In practical terms, it means these handsets are best for deploying unconnected games, but not terribly useful for deploying business or informational applications that need to connect to the internet.
Upgrading the firmware will take care of the issue so hopefully SEMC fixed this before shipping the S710 to Cingular. I'll take a look pre-production version to see if they did and report back.
