Guardian Unlimited releases branded newsreader
GuardianUnlimited has released a branded feed reader that's pretty cool, going to show the diversity of different forms that feed readers can take. It doesn't seem to be reporting a number of subscribers just yet to publishers, but I'm sure that will come in time.

Ev's rules
Ev's a great guy and it comes out in the thoughtfulness put into this post:
evhead: Ten Rules for Web Startups
The only thing I would add to #9 is to "Be Agile, but not too agile". Companies that take the same approach as a little league soccer team following the ball around often fail as well as those that stay the same course. The right answer is somewhere in the middle.

nope, no tourettes, just testing
sorry for the noise and naughty language, i was testing some things. what i can tell you is this:
1. content owner tagging creates a big tag-spam problem. the places that use them don't seem to have any countermeasures in place
2. tag spamming raises ad revenues (new traffic, i guess)
3. there are some interesting user agents that seek out special things
4. technorati users tend to use firefox. everyone else in the world uses IE
5. there are some sick people who execute some sick searches. we all knew that

ypn vs adsense revenues
while on the topic of blog advertising i thought i'd mention i have been bouncing around in various places testing YPN ads as well as my traditional Google AdSense ads, and interestingly, YPN is consistently performing better and paying more. in many cases about twice as much. i find this curious, because i personally don't find the YPN advertisers to be as compelling, but perhaps the Overture marketplace provides higher CPCs? more analysis needed, but I can't argue with the $.

eMiniMall ad units and artificially lowering the CTR
i actually think the Chitika eMiniMall ad units are pretty cool, but they recently changed their ad unit to prevent what they call "curiousity clicks" and this has caused an interesting publisher backlash - because they have essentially artificially lowered the Click Thru Rate by making sure people are really interested before clicking through. I don't like this move, mostly because of my own personal ad clicking behavior. i "curiously click" a lot, not because of the ad unit, but because i am interested in the content or product. i might not buy it right then, but i do bookmark these things and go back to them later - and every so often, I do execute a transaction either right then or later. now, this does cause a now vs later session tracking problem that needs to be handled for publishers and advertisers to be happy, but isn't that what should be worked out in the long run?
micropublishers are very sensitive to changes in payments, and (rightly) will bounce around from network to network to see what pays them the most money now. it's really hard to make the argument to micro-publishers that taking a haircut now will end up making them more money in the long run. sophisticated publishers who have been selling their own advertising for a while understand this, but bloggers and other micro-publishers do not.

Mobile ESPN - a good MVNO idea
Mobile ESPN

ESPN has launched their MVNO service via their website and the demo does look pretty cool. It looks like they've done a damn good job of packaging and marketing this phone for the average pro sports fan - and i gotta admit, i'd be tempted if i cared about sports other than college football. So far there is one Sanyo phone (a good choice) and answers the question "How can I possibly get more sports into my life?"
Mobile ESPN really is running on the Sprint PCS network in the background over their EVDO network, so well, that's something you'll have to put up with if you wish to go this route.

Google Desktop Index taking up 2.5 GIG of hard drive space
i really like Google Desktop and it provides some good utility for me in searching my files...but not 2.5 GIG worth. take a look at your c:\Documents And Settings\your account\Local Settings\Application Data\Google.
sigh, i had to turn off indexing, but i still love the sidebar, which is my to-do list.

paris is burning
lots of unrest in Paris - and i'm presenting there in a few weeks. it should be interesting to see how this plays out... i'm generally not a paranoid traveller. i was in London when the U.S. attacked Iraq, and in London again during the 7/7 bombings this year. it made things a little inconvenient, but that was about all.

I used to do these shootouts, but Michael Oryl just does such a better job. The K750 has the same camera as the W800i which is great. The N90 looks pretty nice as well.

Scoble on how people are finding blogs
Scobleizer - Microsoft Geek Blogger » How are people finding blogs? It’s not blog search engines
This is so true - when i look at my blog traffic via blogbeat or Measure Map , both of which i recommend, i'd say about 99% of all my traffic comes from Google searches, and nothing else.
I'd love to know how many people do more than one hand-typed Technorati search per day - for their own name or company. Technorati is a vanity play, which is actually a great business model. They just need to admit it. Just don't let them fool you into thinking people actually use it as a search engine for anything else!

new trend: PSP compatible websites
Ubergizmo has created a PSP compatible version of it's content - pretty cool new trend for some of these "ultrablogs" to do. I find myself using my PSP to do some random browsing quite a bit these days. It will be interesting to see if there is a cottage industry that pops up around content creation for the PSP, if there isn't already.
If you like gizmodo or engadget, give Ubergizmo a try.
