In what seems like his 87th novel, Yellow Dog, Martin Amis proves that he is still an immature asshole, even going on what's got to be 50 or 55 years old by now. Somebody needs to revoke Amis' writing license, as he's been scrivening drunk one too many times. The prickish turns of phrase, the very very British smug wit (oh so funny but ALWAYS and ONLY at somebody's expense), it's all here again - it's all classic Amis. I read this book in one and a half days because you don't need to ever pay very close attention to his work. Long on attitude and short on everything else, the narrative structure of this work is so ponderous it would take 10 men to lift it. Now THAT'S a turn of phrase, Marty.

ps, goes to show how vastly respected Kingsley still is long after his death that his son is allowed to foist this trash upon us. Shame on me for ponying up another 20 bucks to keep the charade alive. Note to Saul Bellow: I know you liked his dad but can you stop helping the kid out? he is old now in his own right, and he should make his own literary friends. I always want a nice long hot bath after reading this jerk-store. Yuck.

i agree, he's an ass. but i rather liked many of the stories in HEAVY WATER (i think that's the right title.) but i've heard nothing but bad stuff about this latest. i thumbed through it in the aeropuerto and thought better of buying it.

There is no great genius without some touch of madness.
