I love Jeopardy and I've been a fan for longer than I can remember. I especially like shouting the answers at the TV (and sometimes I even get them right!). At the beginning it was exciting to see Ken Jennings win all the time, but it is starting to ... [Read More]

KEN IS MY HERO! Even though none of my friends attempt to watch one episode of Jeopardy, I've been addicted for about 2 years now. I'll talk about Ken and they'll reply with "Who the hell is Ken Jennings." I love it. Ken's the man!

Ken's great but...I'd love to see him lose early next season. The games are so one-sided that it's not any fun anymore. The fascination aspect of it has worn off for me. The little guy is so intense and so competitive, which is fine, but with the number of wins he has had it's hard not to dislike him during the games. I still don't know how he can beat people so consistently on the buzzer, either. Does his concentration ever lag? Freaky. That's all that can be said about it.

Everyone knows the "story" Jeopardy is telling, but heres the real story...
Ken was a computer programer/tech support with Sony Pictures Entertainment Company, the parent company to Sony Pictures Television, which produces Jeopary. He was fired by Sony for inappropriate use of company resources. (He was using their servers to run his own web-based business, but thats a whole other story). So anyway, Ken was able to come up with some strange company policy loopholes and had a beautiful case against Sony for what he called his "wrongful termination". He met with VP David Hendler and they struck a deal to prevent Ken from suing Sony. Heres a quick overview of their agreement. Ken was able to show that had he settled out of court with Sony, the likely payout would have been $2 million+. Had the case been heard in court, he could have taken Sony for upwards of $4 million (much of that going to cover Ken's legal fees). Ken had always wanted to be a contestant on Jeopardy, but wasn't allowed because he was an employee of Sony. No longer an employee, he now had his chance, but would have to wait until the next regular season began taping after Labor Day. To drop the case, David agreed to get Ken onto the show and allow him several weeks to make some money on the show. The agreement stated that Ken will continue to win shows and remain the champion until he has earned at least $1.75 million dollars, and won at least 47 consecutive shows, setting a new record for most wins on a game show. Ken is a really smart man in his own right, and the shows producers only tell him the correct answers to 85% of the questions before the show is taped. Mr. Jennings is confident enough that once he has gone past the 47 shows and is no longer receiving the answers, he can continue on his own to earn over $2.18 million, the all-time record for winnings by a game show contestant. If you are a fan of Ken and/or the show, I won't post anymore information here.

Okay, for all of Ken Jennings's intellectual gifts, there are numerous reasons to truly loathe the little "Alfred E. Neuman" teetotaler. Anyone who bases his or her connection to God on a 19th-century guy who claims to have been told by an angel to dig up some plates in the ground is a member of a cult, pure and simple. And this guy would rather crack open an encyclopedia than his wife. If I hear that big-eared barnhole say "phhewww!" one more time as if he deserves to get a particular question, I'll personally fly to Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City and beat the methane out of him.
Posted by: Rolf Chakras | July 26, 2004 10:09 AM
Its sad that so many people have such a hypercritical opinion of this guy who is only playing a "game" to the best of his ability when someone is willing to pay him for it. He may have faults but everyone does. For me, I'd rather that he believe in Jesus as his personal savior, but please layoff the nonsense.

Ken is Ken. Talented, kind hearted, and a human being with a zest for knowledge. He's the real deal. He's a nice guy that got lucky... by having the opportunity to appear on the show, where he could just do his thing. It's too bad folks out there have so much dislike for a winner. I guess it's like Country music... you either like it... or you don't. I don't care for it much. Hurray for Ken. Boo to all you naysayers... and shame on you. I guess there were those that didn't like Michael Jordon either. Oh well.

It's refreshing to see a guy that isn't afraid of just being who he is. With all the tatoos and piercings and the crummy looking guys out there trying to look like what? movie stars or porn stars?? Nice to know there's good people not trying to hide under the pretentious TV and Movie idolism / symbolism that's screwing up the world and making it hardened. You go Ken! Pay no attention to the paparazzi types that never have nice things to say anyway.

i can't stand watching ken jennings win all the time. i get so peed off seeing him hog all the questions. enough is ENOUGH!!! i just want the show to go back to normal. ken looks very greedy the way he wagers just the right amount to win. will you just loose all ready?
Posted by: jeff | September 9, 2004 10:17 AM
Loved the kottke piece on the Cult of Ken...brilliant. But...I guess the show's producers got what they wanted by dropping the limit of days/winnings. I say GO KEN! He plays to win...and if they've given him the go ahead, why not? Isn't that what America is all about (or is it?) Something to think about.
Posted by: Amolibri | September 9, 2004 11:31 AM
Hey "The Greg" How do you know so much personal information about Ken? How do we know what you are saying about him is true? Sure, sometimes I think that the show is rigged and Ken is a plant to boost the shows ratings but I have no evidence of that, just a hunch. I think it is time for him to move on and give others a chance but I wonder if anything posted here is true?

"The movie Quiz Show chronicles the winning streak of Charles Van Doren, who captures the attention of the nation, and is later found out to be a fraud". Could this be the plight of Jeapordy's Ken Jennings? You decide.
Posted by: Ken Jennings | September 9, 2004 03:11 PM
With all the immoral behavior and fashions out there, I really think it's refreshing to see a nice, wholesome, clean cut, family man do well. The "facts" that some portray about him here seem as reliable as the spin now circulating about President Bush. You Go, Ken, and God Bless.

I saw a piece on "60 Minutes" Sunday, 9-5-04, showing how dificult it is to get your rhythym going on this show. A big congrats to Ken for his wins, and BIG hopes for his continued success!!! It douesn't matter how much money he has won, you have to be smart and able to think quick on your feet, AND get your buzzer to ring in first. It's a GAME for crying out loud! it's meant to be emtertainmentment. If you don like it, simp;y turn the channel! So, quit being jealous of Ken's wins; just rejoice with Ken, and keep watching - or MOT! It's YOUR choice!!!
Posted by: Mary | September 10, 2004 10:08 AM
I think Kens winning streak is a fraud to get more viewers to tune in. He needs to give the other contestants a chance if he a faithful mormon. He streak was fun to watch but it is getting old fast and needs to come to a halt, faster!

God, it's time to get Ken off the set. Wasn't his white-bread existence boring enough? Do we have to see it every night on the only decent game show on television? Why, oh, why did they change the 5-game rule! Saints have mercy!

I love Ken Jennings. May he rule Jeopardy Land forever more.

Alright, enough of this nerdy lilly white guy. Jeapordy got what they wanted, higher approval ratings. Despite this, it is really time for him to go. I honestly don't believe that all of this is legit this his day and age. Sure, he is the man, a hero, the champ or whatever you want to label him but it is for him to go, it is getting old really fast.

In late October they will air Ken Jennings final appearance on "Jeopardy". There's a rumor that he loses after posting his 75th win at over 2.5 million dollars. This leak came out Sept. 7th after the show was taped. Ken didn't say if it was true, or not. He did say, "If you heard it on the internet it must be true." lol What you think?
Posted by: Rick | September 14, 2004 02:01 PM
First of all... Ken doesn't belong to a cult, He belongs to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and if you can't tell by the name, he does believe in Jesus Christ. Besides, why isn't it possible that someone could have been told through divine inspiration to dig up some sacred plates that were put in the ground by a Christian centuries ago. We find burried artifacts all over the world, these were just too special to be found by just anyone. If you've ever read the book or the true story of that 19th century man named Joseph Smith, you might understand it too. But all that is beside the point... he is winning this show because of his intelligence, not because he is a "Mormon"... Seriously though, if he belonged to any other religion would it have ever been mentioned or even been an issue?
Posted by: Alyssa | September 14, 2004 03:43 PM
who would actually buy something with his face on it. he is the biggest dork ive ever seen. his stupid trademark deep breath followed by the " I cant believe it" head shake makes me want to knock him out. please someone beat him
Posted by: Adam | September 14, 2004 06:24 PM
I rooted for Ken Jennings when he first appeared, but his holier than thou smirking demeanor is beyond irritating and I really want to smash my foot through the TV. As a cop with 25 years on the job, I know folks in my profession get cynical, but I smell a rat, and I smell a conspiracy, someone is feeding this guy answers, and the nerd has a photographic memory. But a photographic memory has its limits, no long term instant recall of recent rote type studies. As for the comments by Alyssa dated Sep 14th, the Mormons are a cult, trust me sugar. Hmmmm lets explore, some guy digs up gold, no really solid gold tablets and an angel only this guy can see helps the dude translate the tablets into the Book of Mormon, then they bury them. Hmmmmm, and no one else saw or knew of these tablets, and the original book of Mormon stresses pluralism, for lay folks that poligamy, then all of a sudden poligamy is not mentioned in the modern day book of Mormon, (definitely not the orginal work). And this entire event occurred in realtively modern times, the 19th century, so I'm saying it's a stretch. Golden tablets yeah right. Hoo-boy. Jeopardy is doing what it has to do to boost ratings, even cheating.

Posted by: SNEM | September 15, 2004 09:35 PM
It's sad the lies people have heard about a religion that I belong to and have been studying my entire life. If you want the truth, go to the source. Find one of those supposed "original" Book of Mormons and one of today's, in fact, I'll give you mine, and show me the differences.
In the mean time, everyone needs to get off this 'conspiracy' crap. Just because something good is happening for Ken and Jeapordy is benefitting from it, doesn't mean it was planned. Good things happen in the world, and I think Ken is a good thing! Besides, if you watch him, it's all skill! I mean seriously, he's been doing this in clubs and competitions for how long? He just knows his stuff.
Posted by: Alyssa | September 16, 2004 09:33 AM
OK. 1.Religion has nothing to do with this.
2.If Jeapordy was going to pull off a stunt
like this, they could have done it forever
ago. I'm sure employees have been fired
from the show's producer before. I doubt
they would risk the show's reputation on
this.

I heard some one talk about how they felt that when Ken shakes his head while they annouce his winnins annoying, well I find this godly. I love it lol. I would shake my head to, I mean come on the man is a virtual genius and he is not cheating. I didn't watch Jeopardy before him and now I do and when he is gone i won't watch it. Right now there holding a 2 week tournament of champions and I am not watching it because it sucks. Ken is the man.
Posted by: King James | September 22, 2004 10:43 AM
I have really been amazed at how quick Ken is at the buzzer and he usually has the correct answer. As far as his choice of religions, just because the book of Mormon has the name "Jesus Christ" in it, does not make a Mormon a Christian! Do the Moromon's believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died for us so that all who believe in him will have eternal life? I have always been told that the Mormon religion is the world's biggest cult. A simple reminder: Not all cults are bad! A true Christian will not criticize Ken for being a Mormon, we are not the judge! One can only hope that a man with his level of intelligence will take a serious and educated look at Christianity and see where that leads him.
Question: "Who is the one true Lord and Saviour?"
Answer: "Jesus Christ"
Posted by: Karen | September 23, 2004 10:18 AM
I just have to say something. Living a Mormon my whole life, I can tell you it is not a cult. We are Christian faith, with one difference. The belief in the Book of Mormon. When Joseph Smith was 14 years old he set out to find the true church. After finding a grove of trees he prayed to God asking which he should join. Upon him descended "two personages who stood above me in the air. One of the spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other- This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! He was told to join none of them. Later on, after revelations Joseph climbs a Hill (cumorah) to find these sacred plates. Angel Moroni appears and tells him to translate the Book of Mormon. (For corrections sake he was not the one who helped translate it this was Olivery Cowdery and Martin Harris)... and there are more than one witnesses... read the front inside cover of the Book of Mormon. It has the testimonies and declarations of 11 witnesses to the Book of Mormon. I hope that clears out any misconceptions. If you have any questions post them here or email them to me at JazzFan4719@yahoo.com. Please remember I'm only 16 and I don't know everything, but I can clear some misconceptions.
Posted by: Mike | September 23, 2004 10:56 PM
I am proud of Mike and Alyssa for standing up for what they know to be true. Yeah Mormons! Yeah Ken! I think Ken has taken an educated look on Christianity, and I am so glad he found the restored church of Jesus Christ. The same church Jesus Christ himself established when he was on the earth. After the Apostles were killed the church faded off. Joseph Smith Jun. is a Prophet of God, who helped to restore the True Church of God to the earth. We should be grateful. Don't judge Ken, because of the things he knows to be true. He's just incredibly smart and he's playing an honest game. Take care.

Wow, um ya'll really need to grow up. since when did jeopardy become an issue of religeon? so what if he's a mormon? so what if he may be recieving divine intelligence? big deal. we all use our natural powers in everyday life. and for 2 million bux, i bet we'd all do a lot more. besides, ken's not a human. he's an alien. he was taken from his planet by orders of george bush. he was supposed to divert america's attention from the bungle up massacre he's creating in iraq. and the end of the world is coming soon, so we better follow our prophet Mr. Jennings. he will lead us to the holy land! he will show us divine knowledge that our small minds will have difficulty adjusting to! he will heal our wounds and keep safe our children! JOIN THE CULT OF KEN JENNINGS! OUR SAVIOUR! OUR LORD!

p.s. there's an awesome article in the New York Times about ken and jeopardy, i encourage ya'll to read it. :)

People think Ken is anoying? What abouy the way Alex Trebek reads the correct answers (questions) as if he's pulling them off the top of his head? I know Alex is a smart guy but Ken should be the new host when (if) he is defeated.
Also, I am not a Mormon, but I can not believe that his religion is so important to people. Would people discuss it if he were Catholic or Protestant?
Posted by: warren | October 10, 2004 08:14 PM
I think that Ken is doing a fabulous job....GO KEN! He has brought of lot of enjoyment to the water cooler crowd, chatting it up on how he did on the last show. I think his religious beliefs should be left to him, as a persons belief in Christ is a personal thing and shouldn't be slandered. Anyone who believes that a christian is a cult member is misinformed. Where do you get your information?
Posted by: Norma | October 14, 2004 10:29 AM
Good observation Warren, regarding the thoughts of would there be such a discussion if he were of another religion.

Ken Jennings is arrogant. Trebek is smoochin his but all the time. I want him to lose and lose BAD!
Posted by: Adam | October 18, 2004 07:32 PM
Ken is an ASS, he always tries to say answers in a cutesy way, in stead of saying "what is mexico" with an x sound, he has to say it like he's some kind of authentic hispanic person, with the jota, "What is MeHHico" Alex. He's the whitest mo fo on earth. And then that lisp, Jesus Christ I wish he would lose.
Posted by: sam | October 18, 2004 07:38 PM
How about Ken replacing Alex when he retires? Here is someone that actually knows the answers, without sounding sanctimonious???

I hope Ken gets at least over $3,000,000. Then I hope he loses

I can't understand why anyone hates Ken Jennings because he is winning a game on TV. What's all this about religion? What does religion have to do with being a TV game player? You all have me befudled. Any answers out there?
Posted by: Diane | November 1, 2004 01:57 AM
It's not about religion... it's about resentment.
But religion is a handier way to deal with the resentment. And I can't watch Jeopardy anymore. There's no angst! Ken Don't Swear... He Don't Even Sweat! So.... here's my muck....
Ken Jennings if proof that the Mormons have been carrying on an active Eugenics program to breed the perfect Nerd.

Posted by: Karen | November 3, 2004 04:43 PM
I think it is a shame that no matter what you read
there is always someone out there knocking someone. I am impressed by Ken and his knowledge
there isn't too many people that could get up there and do what he is doing and last as long as Ken has. so until you can get up there and show him up, you don't have any room to cut him down.
Posted by: peggy | November 3, 2004 10:05 PM
Somebody Help! Ken Jennings is being held captive by Jeopordy! They won't let him go. They are enslaving him and holding him randsom for 2.5 million dollars! There is something fishy going on at Jeopordy, and I think we really need to get the FBI involved, that is the only way that ken will ever be free again. The only reason he is winning all of these shows is because he is beat for every question he misses. Have you ever noticed how he hangs his head after getting a question wrong? He is thinking to himself "here comes Alex with the whip again." We need a world wide move to:
FREE KEN JENNINGS!!!

Warning: spoilers. I received a tip about Ken Jennings this morning which I have pasted below in black-on-black text. If you don't want to spoil your enjoyment of Jeopardy for the next few days/weeks, don't read it. If you want to read it, just highlight the text in your browser. Those reading the site in newsreaders, you'll just have to close your eyes or something. So here's the scoop:
"I was at the taping today of Jeopardy. He lost during his 75th game and eventually won 74 games. He ended up with 2.5M. He got a standing ovation by the crowd. I asked the studio if this was supposed to be a secret but they said we could spread the news.

Does anyone know what day his final appearance will air?
Posted by: Barb | November 15, 2004 09:01 PM
Does it really matter what religion he believes in? No. Does it matter if the whole thing was rigged? No, because we can't do anything about it. In the end, Ken has over $2.3 million (so far), and I'm sure most of us don't.He's entertaining to watch, and isn't that what we all want? Entertainment? Christ, just the fact that we're all talking about this, whether it be in a negative light or not, means that we're paying attention to Jeopardy. Which is what Sony wants.

I simply love Ken. There's no denying it, I'm sorry. If he can earn all that money, then more power to him, I say! And, if you think about it, he was probably the cutest four-year-old around. And, remember John Stevens from the third season of American Idol? He's like a younger red-headed Ken! Only Ken is better!

Ken, we really enjoy your performance on Jeopardy and always root for you to win. I'm sorry that so many small minded losers post mean spirited messages to you...but I know that you are too smart to take it seriously. I respect your knowledge of the Bible and hope and pray that you will study it through again without the influence of the Mormon religion. Jesus said: I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" Since the bible was written by the Holy Spirit through God's chosen prophets, it cannot be added to or subtacted from by mere men (Rev 22:18-19) no matter who they claim to be.

So apparently Ken looses today. I hope someone posts it online because I can't watch it. I don't know what'll happen now. We just expect Ken to be there. We've taken him for granted and now...*sniff*...he won't be there. I never even got to say goodbye! [Cries like a little girl.] I don't know how I'll go on...
Ken rocks but the whole Mormon thing just irks me. At least he doesn't flaunt it. But to tithe the church ANY part of his 2.5 million is ridiculous. It makes me sad when kids can't go to college out of high school and instead are shipped off to the Caucuses or wherever to force a corporate religion upon others. I've seen it happen.
Anyway, way to go Ken.

Mr Jennings, has a vast database in his brain. He is a very competive individual. he broke all game shows records. Records are meant to be broken, in my lifetime or yours you will never see this record broken, maybe the monry aspect but not the consecutive days. Jeopardy has been on televsion for many years and the shows credibility is second to none.Until there is concrete evidence of tampering Mr Jennings name and streak will be in the Guinness book of records. As far as him being a fraud give me concrete evidence that can be proven

How come I don't see anyone else post what has been obvious to me? Ken was being "primed" as the next Jeopardy host. Alex Trebek is how many years old? A.T. has been hosting for how many years? Ratings were up how high during Ken's run? It all makes sense to me...look for him once in a tournament of champions reprise, and then wait another year (if that) and then he will take the helms....and it DOESN'T have to be a conspiracy, just common sense from a business standpoint.

Amagad...! I'm so happy you people don't mind all the things ut there that aren't that important. Yeah, that's right, spend all your time on stroking this Ken guy silly. And never mind the whole world, that think of Americans as total morons - who will blame us?
Sopiga galningar, kort sagt!

For those who think Ken must be a fraud because he has done so well, there are two things you should know:
1. The buzzer system on Jeopardy sucks until you figure it out. Once you "get" the buzzer, you can get every almost answer you know when playing against new players. Think of racing bicycles against two people who have never actually learned to ride. They would be toast even if they do have good motor skills.
2. Ken played for years on the college quiz bowl circuit. Imagine having someone ask you 1,000s of Jeopardy questions every week. It doesn't take more than a couple of years to have mastery of the questions and facts everyone asks about over and over and over. You learn all the capitals, all major battles, lists and lists of authors and works, and on and on. Sure, you may not know who wrote "Golden Boy" the first five times you here the darn question, but the next 15 times you become the Golden Boy.

I read only the top of this thread, but I agree strongly with the first poster. Ken Jennings not only sucks but he is also a douche bag!I am so glad that he lost. FUCK YOU KEN JENNINGS!!!!! And fuck all of you Ken fans!

I don't like your attitude Marc Bernard, what is your problem with Ken? Maybe you can't measure up to him. I can see you sitting watching Kenny do his thang and by the time you began to process the question he was onto another one. Ken is God, Jesus, Buddha and Mohhammed roled into one with a pound of bacon. Bow down to him infidel or burn in hell.
Posted by: Timothy | December 3, 2004 04:40 PM
you know ken lost several days ago why are you people still mad about it? And for all you people who think the mormon religion is a cult why don't you go to the nearest mormon church you can find and talk to some of the people there? Have you ever actually read the Book of Mormon? If not you have no right to call it bad.

Oh, well did Katie win again today?
I guess we will see Ken in the Tournament of Champions or Masters.
If they can get enough champions.

I watched almost every episode of Jeopardy while Ken was on. I was so pleased to see such a young man with such wonderful manners and a great sense of humor. I thought he was always the perfect gentleman, even when he finally lost, he handled himself with total class. I have always been a jeopardy fan and will continue to be, but the "Ken days" were the best. I was so disappointed when he finally lost. I miss seeing his sweet face every night at 7:30. Good luck to you and your family, Ken, and may God continue to bless you.

We are all huge Jeopardy fans and continue to root for Ken Jennings. One friend of ours keeps calling him Jen Kennings! Go go go, Ken, and ignore the nay-sayers: they are only jealous. You have a wonderful and supportive family, too. Bless you and may you become the Jeopardy champion of all time!
