how to enable your LG CU500 for dial-up networking (DUN) via Bluetooth

i've been waiting for Cingular to launch their HSPDA network to migrate my old AT&T wireless account over to CIngular (which is now the new AT&T wireless). i'd love to know how much they spent moving everything over to the Cingular brand, just to move it all back to AT&T, but i digress.
at any rate, they finally launched their high speed 3G network last week, so i picked up a LG CU500 over the weekend.
i'm not terribly impressed with this phone yet, but if you like the moto RAZR, i actually think this is a better way to go. I'll do a mini-review later; there's a few specific things i think they messed up big time with the firmware on this phone.
at any rate, i'm throwing this out there for others to find. out of the box, the phone is not configured with a DUN bluetooth profile. you have to turn it on.
go to Settings -> (7) Connection -> (3) Dial Up Networking -> (2) Bluetooth and make sure it is selected. THEN pair it with your laptop so that it recognizes this Bluetooth profile. If you've already paired it with your computer, you will probably have to delete the pairing, and then re-pair it.
the phone number you want to use for Cingular is *99# there is no username or password. (UPDATE: see the comments, some users claim to need a u/p, but it works for me without it)
i didn't have to install any dirvers to get Bluetooth DUN to work on XP SP2.
more later once i do some speed tests on this.

Comments
The correct phone number is *99#, (not #99*), and the connection requires the following for Cingular authentication:
User: ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Psw: CINGULAR1
I was able to get a bluetooth connection with my LG CU500 that resulted in a 544kbps download, and 114kbps upload via the speakeasy speedtest http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

oops, yes, *99# - mine works without a username and password. odd.

I'm having trouble with this. I've tried with and without the username/password and with both phone numbers. I can see the phone attempt the call but then the laptop just gives the below error message a moment later. The error pops up only a second after I press connect, not even long enough a time for it to have really attempted a call. The phone displays a graphic like it's trying to connect but then suddenly disconnects.
----------->
"Error 619: A connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed."

Steve, my phone does the same thing, with or without the u/p. Cingular's site lists some advanced initialization strings, but when I put them in, the phone reports back an error when the computer tries to send them. Without them I get the same thing, a connection screen that goes away real quick, and an error 619...
This is frustrating :)

I fixed the 619 error, in the modem properties for your CU500 put the following as the extra initilization command line:
at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"
Bam, it works :D

I just got the LG CU-500. They sent me a new SIM card (with the "3G" label on it) so that I can take advantage of the 3G network. Now, i cannot connect using dial-up. Did anyone have this problem and is there a work around this? I used my old SIM card on the LG CU-500 initially and when I had that I was still able to connect to the internet using my cellphone despite only have EDGE or GPRS connection... Now, my phone is capable of 3G but I can't connect my laptop to the internet anymore. Does anyone know how to solve this?

For more info: my phone connects but disconnects right away as well. I used various settings such as:
1.
username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
password: CINGULAR1
phone: *99***1#
2.
username: ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
password: CINGULAR1
phone: *99#
3.
username:
password:
phone: *99#
Amazingly enough, all 3 of those allows me to be connected for a brief moment before the connection disconnects... If you know of a solution, please post it... thanks!

I just got the thing to work correctly on a Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000 running Cacko Linux and Ambicom Bluetooth card
First configure the phone:
http://www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/964849-1.html
1) Press 277634#*# to get into the ENGINEERING (PHONE TEST) MODE.
2) In this menu, press 4 for PORT SETTING
3) In this menu, press 2 for DATA SETTING
4) In this menu, press 2 to set bluetooth as your data (BT SET for data)
5) Go back into ENGINEERING MODE in step 1.
6) Press 5 for MODEM SETTING
7) In this menu, press 6 for GRPS ATTACH
8) In the pop up, choose number 1 for POWER ON. This was the only setting I got to work properly. Press the RED/END-CALL button to return to the main screen.
9) Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone and all those settings are the way you want them.
10) In the settings menu of the phone, choose number 7 for CONNECTION.
11) In this menu, press 3 to set dial up networking to Bluetooth.
- Bluetooth card was autodetected
Network settings for Linux
Service: Bluetooth - PPP
-------------------------
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Phone: *99#
Dial Using: Tone (Pulse works too)
Modem Init String: ATZ
Speed: 460800
Network: (I used OpenDNS addresses)
First DNS: 208.67.222.222
Second DNS: 208.67.220.220
Searched for BT Device, found CU500
BT Address was then filled in
Phone is always prompted for pin, usually 1234 (also try 4321 or 0000 or nothing)
Can't seem to put break returns into this comment. Oh well

Here's a cool demo we've recently created to watch video on your phone - Browse to www.dittybop.com on your LG. The 3G connection makes this work very well. This is a great handset.
You can read about what makes the demo tick at our blog (http://businesms.blogspot.com/2006/11/mobile-video-all-rage-or-big-flop.html)

Okay, I figured it out on my own. For those in the future who might come here and wonder the same thing:
FOR WINDOWS XP (I dunno anything about Vista; it isn't here yet as of this writing):
Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties" on the menu, then the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button, then look for "Modems" in the list of categories shown. Click the "plus" sign and the sub-list will show the Bluetooth modem device. Right-click on the device name, and select "Properties."
Click the "Advanced" tab on the resulting dialogue, and you'll see the entry field for "Extra initialization commands." This is where I typed in the initialization string mentioned in "Robert's" post above:
at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

What about using the phone as a 56k modem? I have tons of voice minutes, and we have dialup at home...I'd like to be able to use the internet at school.
Posted by: Patrick Kozub | January 7, 2007 11:46 AM
I tried using it as a 33.6 modem but every time I try to dial the phone responds and then exits the call. I am assuming it is that I have the internet functions disabled where I don't accidently use the internet since I don't have a data plan. I would of guessed that dialing up to an ISP would of been considered a regular call but my phone seems to block it like any other internet request. I may have to get the data plan if I can actually connect to the internet with my laptop.

My CU500 works fine when I link it with my headset however, I can,t get it to work correctly with my BT V2.0 for my computer. They show to pair up on the screen and accept my passcode but when I go to send anything my phone shows that the file is sending but won,t pass 0%.

Well, I was having the same problems this morning. It worked in the past but not today. I then remembered that I had activated the AIM from my phone last night. Apparently, your phone can either be connected directly to the internet or be used as a modem, but it cannot do both at the same time. So, if you are still getting the error 619 message and have made it work in the past, you should make sure your phone is disconnected completely from the network services before you try to dial in.
Posted by: John | February 26, 2007 07:44 AM
I still get "answering modem has disconnected." error. I never had this problem till they gave me my new sim card. Interestingly enough, it has a "3G" emblem on it.
